Most of their EZX packs include some mixer presets that range from decent starting points with light processing keeping things under control and making the kits feel nice and lively through to more effected stuff that honestly, I've never found use for. Volume, pan, muting soloing and routing can be tweaked per channel, and we can also work with the internal master processing. We also have deeper access to the internal mixer of EZDrummer in Reaper's FX window. It's worth mentioning that I've found some polarity and routing inconsistencies between libraries from time to time when I've been digging deep into Frankensteining kits together, but if it's just swapping out a snare here, a cymbal there etc, that seems to work fine. Overall it'll likely be a little more expensive to curate a selection of libraries that interest you (Toontrack call these EZX packs), but the Sibiac overlay (which also works with LBL) makes mixing and matching between those EZX packs super simple. If unlocking more flexibility is the goal, I'd probably nudge you toward EZDrummer instead. It's a no-brainer to grab that and see how it works out before splashing any cash.

That said, Slate's free offering is still hands down the best free acoustic kit I've heard. That probably won't be a dealbreaker if you like the stock presets, but speaking as someone who's kinda particular about drums and has grown kinda tired of the stock presets over time, it's becoming a bit of a drag here. I'd say the most significant limitation to be aware of is that right now, we can't configure individual kit pieces. In the Mapping section you can remap any drum hit to any MIDI note, and leading electronic kits are supported.The Steven Slate Drums grooves are open midi format, so although we don't have access to them via the plug-in GUI in Reaper's FX window yet, you can set up a database to browse, audition and insert them using Media Explorer instead.Īll of the access to SSD that we currently have is built on free community resources, LBL, templates and RPL files. Drums are playable from your keyboard, though it’s worth noting that the mapping seems to be set up more for electronic drum kits, so trigger notes will be spread out over the 88 notes of a MIDI keyboard. In the Samples view you can drag and drop your own samples into cells, which correspond to the 32 drum slots available, so it’s easy to either replace sounds or blend them. In the Inst menu you’ll find all the constituent drum hits, and you can replace any part of a kit with a new sample, or double-up samples so that a kick drum, for example, has two samples assigned to it. A display shows you how a kit is loading and you’re told how much RAM is in use. These range from rock and metal to indie, funk and jazz, and are beautifully sampled. With the instrument loaded, you will probably start from the Kits menu, loading up any of the provided kits.

You also need to point it to your downloaded license file, which needs to remain somewhere on your system in order for things to run. Once you start the plug-in, you can point it at the content and it will all show up. It makes sense to offload the sample content onto a secondary drive, which is easy to do.

Some people might prefer that, but on a system where you want to install VST and AU, and 32- and 64-bit versions, it’s a little fiddly, and it would be better if they were all consolidated into a single installer. Also, the various plug-in format installers are all downloadable separately and must be run separately. The product is available as a download only, and although it’s split into separate files, the total content is around 10GB, so you’ll need a decent internet connection.
